I Love When Someone Makes a Good Point

Please Don’t Lie To Me

This newsletter contains affiliate links. Not all of them, but some of them. I earn a small commission, and it doesn’t cost you anything. I call that a win-win.

So I was listening to the New Media Show with Rob Greenlee, and someone who has a service where you can hear AI do a live stream about sports was on the show. Her first point made me cringe. She said:

"Before we had AI content, there were people who, you know, took somebody else's work without attribution, so I think when you start labeling, you can go down a rabbit hole of non-attribution, but you know, AI is open, it's generating from a vast database of everybody, so I think that is still interesting from a legal perspective, and I think, the biggest thought leadership has to come from the legal industry, and especially like the copyrights, like who owns what which is important, especially in the United States.

The “plagiarism has always existed" would not be an argument I use." While it's true, it doesn't make it a good thing to do. "Shoplifting has always been around so just go ahead and steal."

And so when you said, “Derek Smalls - He Wrote This” and it turns out he didn’t, you’re told me a lie and now I’m upset.

The Point That Made Me Think

I love Dave Barry. If I had an influence, he would be one (and David Letterman, apparently I liked people I shared a name with). When his new articles come out, do I know if he used a typewriter? If he used a computer was in it a Word document or a Google Doc? I don’t know how it was made, I just know I like it.

So if AI makes something I like do I care how it was made? Hmmmmm If I find out the author was a machine, will I still think, “where can I get more of THIS??”. For now, (as that hasn’t happened) I still feel I want to connect with a human. Both of my friends Dave are older than me, and going through the same hurdles of life. I feel connected to them, and (and this is important and will probably be a newsletter in the future) they make me feel nastalgic.

So I’m not quite ready to disregard that AI made content I like (if and when that ever happens), but when it does, I would prefer to know it was AI and not someone posing as a human.

We all hate those bad pitches, but now you can use them to get some exposure for your show. Just read the bad pitch (leave out the names, cause I don’t want to be sued) and explain why it’s bad, and who your preferred guest would be.

Measuring Success: The Secret Sauce for Podcasters

Every month I ask my audience a question for the School of Podcasting. Here is this month’s question:

How do you measure your podcast success that is not downloads. I need your answer by June 26th. Don't forget to tell us a little bit about your show.

So it might be "This is (your name) from (name of show) at (website url) where we (tagline of show). The measurement I use that is not downloads is _______ and why...

That’s today! Hop to it!

The Vice President on Diary of a CEO

I was surprised when this came up from the Algorithm. What I liked about it was the gentle way Steven bartlet disagrees with some statements, and respectfully asks for clarification. It’s also a great exercise watching a smooth politician (I’m convinced both sides of the aisle are crooks) subtle without you noticing provides an answer without (in some cases) answering the question.

This is Rick Springfield?

I took my sister to see Rick Springield in concert (I was not a fan before the concert, but I was after the show - he’s got an edge now that he’s not as popular).

New Stones Single Uses AI To Make Them Younger

This reminds me of the Billy Joel turn the light back on, but done better.

Singing Blood - Late to the Lewis Capaldi Game

I love when a singer can make you feel something. I often call this “singing blood.” I’m new to Lewis Capaldi, but from what I can tell he is the kind of “reflective breakup songs” and this one is called “Before You Go” and when he gets to the chorus you can have no doubt that he feels every word he sings. I’m not sure AI will ever be able to translate that to our ears.

What’s Coming In The Future

I’ve got some interviews coming up, and this week is the Question of the Month (so answer NOW)
